Stop trying to hide that cellulite

Unsightly cellulite impacts as many as 90% of women at some point in their life. Hormonal changes, genetics, diet, and other lifestyle factors can all contribute to the appearance of cellulite. It’s clearly a common problem and many women are eager to address cellulite reduction without surgery or drastic lifestyle changes.

Your options are many, including exercise, massage and diet, but new evidence suggests that another alternative—cosmetic products containing natural plant extracts— may be an effective means of reducing cellulite.

In a study published in the journal Phytotherapy Research , researchers evaluated the effectiveness of a novel cosmetic formulation in reducing the appearance of cellulite in women aged 25 to 35 years. A total of 60 subjects were randomized 1:1 to treatment or control (placebo) arms for 12 weeks. The product was applied twice daily on the legs (thigh area) as directed by the trained aestheticians. At baseline and week 12, investigators independently rated images from standardized digital photographs taken at four different angles to assess changes in skin quality related for the study population.

The primary measure of effectiveness was a statistically significant difference in reduction of the appearance of “orange peel” texture (the orange-peel effect occurs when skin surface looks bumpy), along with improvement in skin quality and overall appearance for the treatment group compared to controls. Results showed that after 12 weeks, there were statistically significant differences between subjects who received product versus placebo for all three parameters: 59% vs 35%, 61% vs 38%, and 53% vs 37%, respectively, showing a greater degree of improvement in those treated with the cosmetic formulation than control.

This study demonstrates that topical application of plant extracts has been shown to be an effective means to improve cellulite, and thus make it less visible. The cosmetic formulation used in this study was safe and well-tolerated.
